Minutes, 1869-1919.

Lists of the members with date and place of birth, date of settlement and date of death or relocation. Not complete for all members. Early meetings are recorded with full text of speeches given, officers elected and members present. Later yearsuse newspaper accounts for description of the meetings. These yearly gatherings were quite festive with families coming from around the country to meet. reminisce and enjoy their neighbors.

Old settlers, those who came before Dec. 31, 1840, of Hancock County met in 1869 to celebrate the fourtieth anniversary of the formation of the county and to form an association for the pioneers in the county. Thereafter, they met yearly for fifty years, through 1919, thought to be the last year. Orville H. Browning spoke at the first meeting. From Quincy, Illinois served as state senator, 1836-1841 and state representative, 1842-1843, delegate to the anti-Nebraska convention in Bloomington, Ill. in 1856 and to the Republican National Convention in 1860, appointed to the U.S. Senate to fill Stephen A. Douglas' seat when he died, and appointed Secretary of the Interior by President Johnson. Formed a law firm in Washington, D.C. in 1863 and practice there until 1866.
